Greening the Mela

One of our major aims as a festival is to significantly reduce the amount of waste produced and our impact on the local and global environment.

Since 2013, as part of our Greening the Mela initiative, we have banned all non-compostable packaging from the Global Food Village – any vendor wishing to serve food on site has to comply with our packaging regulations.

We’re delighted to welcome sustainable partners Vegware back on board this year. Vegware’s catering disposables are made from plants, not plastic. In 2013 the Edinburgh based firm won the Queen’s Award for Enterprise in Sustainable Development and were named the best small business in the UK. Its Food Waste Network offers a free matchmaking service for any UK business seeking food waste recycling. More info on Vegware here.

We are taking very significant steps to further improve our waste streams this year. As ever, we also encourage anyone coming to the Mela to leave the car at home and walk, cycle, or take public transport. More information on how to get here can be found here.
